About psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a commitment and an investment in your mental well being and health. There is no other treatment like it in terms of the deep and far reaching positive effects it can have on your life. It requires a willingness to engage in frequent weekly consultations (two to four sessions a week) and can last a number of years. The result of such an intensive treatment is lasting change in your life, relationships and your overall quality of life.

Unlike other therapeutic approaches, psychoanalysis aims to address the root causes of your problems and not just the surface symptoms. Some people who come to see me have often tried other approaches first, which while being initially helpful have not successfully resolved their problems. This requires a deeper exploration of how unconscious thoughts and feelings may be exerting an influence over behaviour and attitudes in the present.

This may include the exploration of your dreams, which may reveal significant unconscious material about you and your difficulties. It also involves developing a deeper understanding of how you relate to others, with a particular focus on how you might repeat unhelpful patterns of behaviour and communication. Often referred to as ‘the talking cure’, psychoanalysis involves saying whatever is on your mind, with as little censorship as is possible, in order to gain access to the root causes of your distress.

Rather than telling you what to do, my aim is to help you develop the necessary insight to help you come to a better understanding of yourself and your difficulties. This in turn leads to a greater potential for making different choices in your life and relationships which benefit you greatly and help you to live more freely from past constraints.

Issues that initially bring people into psychoanalysis can vary, but may include:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Relationship problems; divorce, affairs, betrayal

  • Work related stress

  • Family issues

  • Child related issues

  • Bereavement

  • Panic attacks

  • Loss of confidence

  • Low self-esteem

  • Sleep problems

  • Sexual problems

  • Abuse and trauma

  • Life stage transitions

  • Difficulty letting go/moving on
