About therapy

I see adults with a wide range of issues related to their lives, work and relationships. I practice a type of therapy known as psychoanalytic therapy, or sometimes also known as psychodynamic therapy.

Unlike other therapeutic approaches, psychoanalytic therapy aims to address the root causes of your problems and not just the surface symptoms. Other approaches offer short term, quick fix solutions, but these rarely manage to create lasting change. Some people who come to see me for therapy have often tried other approaches first, which while being initially helpful have not successfully resolved the problem. This work requires a deeper exploration of how your unconscious thoughts and feelings may be exerting an influence over your behaviour and attitudes.

This approach to therapy can involve the exploration of your dreams, which may reveal significant unconscious material about you and your difficulties. It also involves developing a deeper understanding of how you relate to others, with a particular focus on how you might repeat unhelpful patterns of behaviour and communication. Essentially being in therapy means being encouraged to say whatever is on your mind with as little censorship as is possible, in order that we may begin to gain insight into what may lie beneath what is troubling you.

The freedom to speak one's mind to another person, who is listening without judgement, can be very liberating and lead to all kinds of useful discoveries about yourself.

Rather than telling you what to do, my aim is to help you develop the necessary insight to help you come to a better understanding of yourself and your difficulties. This in turn leads to a greater potential for making different choices in your life and relationships which benefit you greatly and help you to live more freely from past constraints.

I welcome clients from all genders, ages, cultures, races, religions and sexual orientations.
