Identity, Sport and Life Transitions

Presenting Concern

An experienced tennis player sought support after finding it increasingly difficult to accept changes in performance as younger players began to surpass him competitively. Recurring injuries were also becoming more frequent due to excessive training.

What We Explored

The work focused on the relationship between identity, self-worth and sporting achievement. We explored the emotional impact of ageing, changing capabilities and the challenge of accepting a new stage of life. Therapy provided space to acknowledge feelings of loss while recognising the value of past achievements and experience.

Outcome

Over time, the client became more accepting of the natural changes associated with ageing and was able to develop a new sense of purpose. He transitioned into coaching, using his knowledge, experience and passion for the sport to support the development of younger players.
