Motivation, pressure and enjoyment in sport
Presenting Concern
A young academy footballer was experiencing low mood, a loss of motivation and increasing reluctance to attend training. His father was concerned about his future at the club and sought support as his son's enthusiasm for football appeared to be disappearing.
What We Explored
During our early conversations, the client spoke warmly about playing football informally with friends and the enjoyment he experienced in those situations. However, academy football felt very different. The pressure of competition, concerns about contract renewal and fear of disappointing others had begun to overshadow his enjoyment of the game.
Our work focused on helping him reconnect with the aspects of football that had originally drawn him to the sport, encouraging a greater focus on enjoyment and participation rather than outcomes and expectations.
Alongside individual sessions, I also met with his parents to explore the pressures he was experiencing. These conversations highlighted how their own disappointments and setbacks in life had, unintentionally, contributed to the expectations being placed upon him. Together, we reflected on how this pressure was affecting his emotional wellbeing and relationship with football.
Outcome
As the family developed a greater understanding of these dynamics, the pressure surrounding football began to reduce. The client reported feeling more supported and less burdened by expectations, allowing him to rediscover enjoyment in the game. Over time, his motivation improved, his engagement with training increased and football once again became a source of fulfilment rather than anxiety.
