Addiction, Self-Destructive Patterns & Change
Presenting Concern
A man sought therapy due to difficulties with gambling, recurring debt and a persistent sense of emptiness despite being financially successful. He described feeling trapped in patterns of behaviour that repeatedly created stress, instability and chaos in his life.
What We Explored
Our work combined practical strategies to reduce gambling behaviour with a deeper exploration of the emotional and psychological factors contributing to the addiction. This included identifying high-risk situations, developing healthier routines and creating greater awareness of urges and triggers.
Alongside this, we explored his childhood experiences and the impact of growing up with a parent who struggled with addiction and financial instability. Over time, it became clear that some of the patterns he was experiencing in adulthood reflected unresolved experiences from earlier life, including repeated exposure to uncertainty, debt and disruption.
Outcome
As therapy progressed, the client developed a greater understanding of both the practical and emotional factors driving his behaviour. By addressing unresolved feelings from the past while making meaningful changes in the present, he was able to reduce destructive patterns, build greater stability and move away from cycles of addiction and financial chaos that had affected multiple generations of his family.
