Relationships, Loss and Unconscious Patterns

Presenting Concern

A woman in her thirties sought psychoanalysis to better understand why she repeatedly struggled to find a suitable partner and start a family. Although she met many potential partners, she often found herself feeling dissatisfied and concluding that they were not right for her.

What We Explored

Through psychoanalytic work, we began to explore how the loss of her father at a young age continued to influence her relationships in adulthood. Over time, it became apparent that she held an idealised image of her father, against which no potential partner seemed able to compare. We also explored feelings of grief and loyalty that had remained largely unprocessed since his death, and how these unconscious dynamics were shaping her choices and expectations in relationships.

Outcome

As these underlying patterns became better understood, the client was able to approach relationships with greater openness and flexibility. She developed a more realistic and compassionate understanding of both herself and others, and was ultimately able to build a meaningful long-term relationship and start a family.
